Used winter tyres: what to check before buying
A used set of winter tyres can look like a bargain in autumn. A general photograph cannot establish their condition, though. Gather details for each tyre, then arrange an inspection at a tyre workshop. Agree in writing beforehand who pays for the inspection and whether you can decline the purchase if the workshop finds a problem. This checklist is for buying passenger-car tyres in Estonia.
1. Start with the car's requirements
Check the size, load index and speed rating against the vehicle documentation. A matching diameter is not enough. If wheels are included, ask the workshop to confirm their compatibility separately. A set fitted to a similar car is not automatically suitable for yours.
2. Request photographs of the markings
Studless winter tyres in Estonia require the three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol, 3PMSF. M+S alone is insufficient. An exception applies to POR-marked professional off-road tyres complying with UNECE Regulation No. 54; ask a specialist about their suitability. Request a readable photograph of each tyre's markings, rather than a stock image.
3. Compare all four tyres
Ask for each tyre's model, manufacturing date and measured tread depth. Request photographs of measurements at several points. Ask specifically about uneven wear. “Good for another season” is no substitute for measurements and a professional inspection.
4. Check age and history
The final four digits of the date code indicate the production week and year: 2322 means week 23 of 2022. Ask about storage, repairs and the reason for selling. The date alone does not establish roadworthiness.
5. Examine both sidewalls
A sidewall bulge is dangerous: do not buy that tyre. Cuts and cracks need professional assessment. Do not inspect only the outside, and arrange the check before paying.
6. Calculate the total cost
Add inspection, fitting, balancing and delivery to the purchase price. Compare sets of the same size and comparable condition. If the seller will not provide markings or permit an inspection, walk away.
For a Zeppik listing, photograph every tyre and provide exact markings, measurements and known defects. A workshop inspection matters more than a claim that the tyres are “almost new”.
