Introduction
The right food is the basis of a cat's health. Here's what you need to know about feeding your cat.
Nutrient requirements
Cats are carnivores - they need animal protein. Their food should contain quality meat, not fillers (grains). Taurine is indispensable - deficiency causes health problems. Fats provide energy, vitamins and minerals support health.
Wet vs. dry food
Wet food - high moisture content (good for kidneys), similar to natural food, but more expensive and spoils faster.
Dry food - cheaper, lasts longer, helps keep teeth cleaner, but low moisture content can cause kidney problems if cat doesn't drink enough.
It is best to combine - dry food available, wet food as an addition.
Number of feeding times
For an adult cat, 2-3 feedings per day are sufficient. Leave the food in the bowl for no more than 30-60 minutes, then remove. Fresh water must always be available.
What food to choose
Read the ingredients - meat should be the first ingredient. Avoid artificial additives, sugar, excess grains. Prefer well-known brands that meet nutritional standards. Consult a veterinarian, especially if the cat has health problems.
Do not eat human food
Many human foods are harmful to cats - chocolate, onions, garlic, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, xylitol. Fish can contain too much mercury. Milk can cause diarrhea.
