After an autumn walk, it is tempting to put every base layer into one wash. Yet “thermal” describes a use, not a single material. Two similar lightweight tops may need different washing and drying methods.
Separate composition from care
Find both the fibre content and the care symbols. The percentage of merino helps identify the fabric but does not replace the permitted wash programme. Helly Hansen distinguishes synthetic base layers from wool-containing versions. Even within one brand, instructions should not automatically transfer between ranges.
If the label has faded, use the model or product code to find the manufacturer's information. A similar photograph is not enough to identify a match. When buying used, request a close-up of the label; missing instructions are another uncertainty to weigh alongside price and condition.
Build a suitable small load
Check pockets, fastenings, hook-and-loop strips and hooks on neighbouring clothes. Do not mix fine knitwear with items likely to snag it. Choose a detergent permitted for the garment and follow its dosage instructions. A stronger fragrance is not evidence of cleaner fabric.
icebreaker excludes softener and bleach for its garments. Do not automatically replace these with a homemade mixture: vinegar, baking soda and stain removers also need compatibility checks. An unwanted smell is not a reason to exceed the label's temperature.
Plan drying before washing
Clear a suitable space so clean clothing is not left crumpled in a basket. A rack, a flat surface and a tumble dryer are not interchangeable. icebreaker specifies flat air drying for most items but notes exceptions; other ranges may differ.
Once dry, check seams, cuffs and rubbing points. Do not pack a damp set into the next walk's bag. If selling it, describe stretched areas, pilling and size changes honestly: washing does not make worn fabric new.
Save a photograph of the readable label. It helps if the print fades later. For a set assembled from different ranges, photograph both pieces: matching colours do not necessarily mean matching care instructions.
Quick checklist
- Composition and model identified.
- Detergent and programme checked against the label.
- No snagging items in the load.
- Drying method checked separately.
- Only a completely dry set goes into storage.
