A second-hand lint roller is only a useful buy if the reusable handle can accept refills you can actually obtain. This article concerns a manual roller with replaceable adhesive sheets, not a directional fabric brush or an electric fabric shaver. A tidy handle and a partly used roll are not enough evidence of future usability.
Identify the replacement system
Ask for the maker, model marking and photographs of the handle with the roll removed, following the manufacturer's normal replacement method. Request a picture of any refill packaging too. The product name and reference are stronger evidence than a seller's recollection that a similar roll once fitted.
Measure the refill's width and the opening through its core, and inspect the spindle and retaining features on the handle. Also consider the clearance available for the outside of a new roll. Matching width alone does not prove that the roll will rotate or stay attached. Do not cut the core or force it onto a holder to make the demonstration work.
3M describes its Everyday Clean refill as sliding onto the original handle. The useful point is that a refill belongs to a particular system. It does not establish that every roller sold under a similar description has interchangeable parts, or that any unbranded replacement will fit.
Test attachment and movement
With permission, fit the stated refill in the intended way and rotate it gently. Check for catching, excessive sideways movement or a retaining end that no longer holds. Inspect the handle for cracks around the spindle and any joint. Comfortable grip matters, but a rubber cover cannot compensate for a damaged structure underneath.
Ask whether a protective cover is included if the model uses one. Photograph it separately rather than assuming that an object in the background belongs to the sale. An exposed used sheet may have collected dust in storage; it should not be treated as proof of the adhesive condition beneath it.
Check supply and real cost
Before buying, look up the exact compatible refill and confirm delivery to your area. A product page is not a guarantee of current stock. Compare the handle price plus necessary fresh refills and delivery with a complete alternative. Avoid treating an unmarked partial roll as a known number of usable sheets.
Follow the roller instructions and the care label of the fabric you intend to clean. For a permitted test, use an inconspicuous area of a suitable textile rather than delicate or valuable clothing. Do not wash an adhesive-paper roll as though it were a reusable brush. In the listing, separate the handle, cover and unopened refills from any partly used consumable, and describe the fit check honestly.
