A shoehorn is a simple purchase, but a photograph rarely tells you whether it will be comfortable to use. The important measurements are not shoe size or an adjustable expansion range. This tool guides the heel into a shoe; it is not a shoe stretcher and should not be bought to make tight footwear larger.
Start with your usual position
Think about where you put shoes on: sitting on a low bench, standing beside a chair or using a narrow hallway. Ask the seller for the total length and a photograph with a ruler alongside the complete tool. A curved handle can make the useful reach different from what the overall silhouette suggests.
A longer model may reduce how far you need to bend, but it still has to fit your hand and storage space. IKEA describes OMTÄNKSAM as an extra-long metal shoehorn. That is one design example, not a reason to assume that every long tool is equally comfortable or suitable for every user. Never use a shoehorn as a support for body weight.
Look closely at the working end
Ask for clear pictures of both faces of the spoon-shaped end and its entire rim. Check for chips, sharp burrs, cracks, corrosion and a coating that is lifting where it touches the shoe. On wooden examples, look for splits and raised fibres. A dark mark may be cosmetic, but a rough edge deserves closer inspection rather than a promise that it will polish away.
Inspect the shaft from the side for an obvious kink or previous repair. Do not deliberately bend it to test strength. At collection, handle only visibly smooth areas and check that the grip is secure without squeezing hard. A loose cover, cracked hanging loop or rotating handle should be disclosed separately from ordinary surface scratches.
Check fit without forcing the shoe
With the seller's agreement, try the clean tool gently in suitable footwear while seated securely. Loosen the shoe normally first. The end should guide the heel without needing leverage against the shoe collar. Stop if the edge catches, the handle shifts or the tool flexes unexpectedly. This short check does not establish durability.
Follow the care instructions for the actual material and finish. IKEA specifies wiping its coated-steel model with a damp cloth; that does not make soaking appropriate for wood or unknown finishes. Dry the item before storage. For a useful listing, state length, material if known and visible defects, then show the handle and rim clearly. These details are more valuable than describing a used shoehorn as universal.
