A zip on a sofa cushion tells you how its cover opens. It does not confirm that the fabric belongs in a washing machine. Before an autumn tidy-up, make a small inventory: identify the cover, note which sections are removable and find the care instructions for that particular fabric.
Record details before removing anything
Photograph the care label and write down the sofa model, fabric name and article number if available. Take an overall photograph showing which cover belongs on each seat, backrest or armrest. If several pieces look alike, draw a simple paper diagram. Do not mark the fabric with something that might leave a permanent trace.
Distinguish three things: removable cover, fixed upholstery and cushion filling. Instructions for one do not automatically apply to the others. Even a zipped enclosure may not be designed for ordinary washing at home.
The exact fabric matters
IKEA’s instructions for chenille covers emphasize checking the specific fabric’s care instructions and describe some removable sections that must not be washed. By contrast, the GRÖNLID Hillared one-seat cover 005.174.18 allows separate machine washing at up to 40°C, but not tumble drying. That is an example for one identified product, not a universal sofa-care setting.
Check washing, drying and ironing separately. A “delicate cycle” is not a substitute for permission to wash. If the label is missing, use the model and fabric code to find the manufacturer’s instructions or consult a professional cleaner before wetting the cover.
Before buying a used cover
- Compare model, section type, dimensions and fastening positions, not just colour.
- Ask for a care-label photograph and a view of the entire set.
- Find out whether previous washing caused shrinkage or made the cover difficult to refit.
- Inspect zips, seams and the presence of every required piece.
Include the same information when selling. “Fits a similar sofa” is less useful than an exact model and section. A missing label or unknown washing history also matters. Neither gives a sound basis for promising fit or choosing a cleaning method on the next owner’s behalf.
