Autumn can be a pleasant time to refresh a wall with a photograph or drawing. A second-hand frame may suit it, but “30 × 40” without an explanation does not tell you whether your artwork will fit. Establish what has been measured and which parts are included before travelling.
Start with the artwork
Measure the full sheet, including margins. Note the area that must not be hidden by the frame or mount. Outer frame dimensions help plan wall space but do not reveal the sheet size it accepts.
Ask for the dimensions of the rear recess where glazing, artwork and backing sit. The visible front opening is normally smaller. For thicker work, check available depth too; do not force thick material under an unsuitable backing.
Check the mount separately
If a card mount is included, you need both its outer dimensions and its cut-out opening. One frame may accept different picture sizes with and without a mount. Do not assume the mount is included until the seller confirms it.
Request front and rear photographs with a ruler and a clear indication of what is being measured. For valuable or unusual artwork, consult a framer rather than trimming an original to fit a chance purchase.
Inspect behind the picture
Check corner joints, cracks, distortion, backing flatness and retaining clips. Confirm hanging fittings for the intended orientation, or a stand for tabletop use. A missing component can change the total cost.
Find out whether the clear cover is glass or plastic; photographs may not establish this. Ask for scratches and chips to be shown in side light. Do not run fingers along damaged edges or dismantle cracked glass for inspection; arrange safe replacement by a professional.
Plan cleaning, hanging and transport
Cleaning depends on the material and manufacturer’s advice. A glass cleaner is not automatically suitable for plastic or frame finishes. White card alone does not demonstrate protective properties for valuable originals.
Choose fixings for the wall, assembled frame weight and the fixing manufacturer’s requirements. A hanging loop does not make every hook suitable. Protect corners and surfaces for transport, prevent movement and avoid pressure from other items.
Before buying
- Full sheet and important visible area measured.
- Recess size, depth and outer dimensions known.
- Mount and opening checked separately.
- Backing, corners, clips and glazing inspected.
- Included parts, hanging and safe transport planned.
A good purchase is more than a matching frame colour. The artwork should fit without damage, with missing parts and the cost of any alterations understood in advance.
