Autumn evenings at home can be a useful prompt to review your workspace. If you are replacing a chair, do not choose from photographs alone: attractive upholstery says little about whether it holds its height or its controls are convenient.
Measure the space and identify the model
Before visiting, note your desk height and the clear width underneath. Ask for the chair model, seat-height range, seat width and depth, and armrest height. Check the instructions for its intended use and load limit.
Estonia’s Tööelu portal recommends adjustable seat height and backrest. Levers alone do not establish that a particular chair will suit you. Ask which adjustments actually work and request a short demonstration video.
Inspect the base before sitting down
Look at the base, backrest and armrest attachments, and accessible joints. Cracks, missing parts or obvious misalignment are reasons to postpone a sitting test until the chair has been professionally assessed. Do not disguise damage by tightening a random screw.
If no visibly dangerous damage is present, ask the seller to demonstrate the controls. Sit normally on a level floor and adjust height and tilt as instructed. Check that settings hold and the seat does not sink by itself. Do not rock on the edge or test mechanisms with sudden force.
Separate wheel checks from comfort checks
Check that all castors are present and suitable for your floor. Some IKEA castors lock when unloaded: compare their behaviour with the model’s instructions rather than assuming every stationary wheel is broken.
Try the chair at a desk of comparable height. Can you use the work surface, and do the armrests prevent you moving close enough? The seat should not force you to perch permanently on its front edge. A short trial can reveal obvious discomfort but cannot guarantee all-day comfort.
Include the cost of putting things right
Inspect the seat underside, seams, mesh and upholstery. Ask about smells, previous repairs and cleaning methods. A removable cover is not necessarily washable; check its label. The price of a replacement cover or compatible castors may change the value of the deal.
Do not dismantle or attempt to repair the gas lift. IKEA’s instructions reserve work on energy-storing height-adjustment components for trained personnel. If the chair sinks or the mechanism is unfamiliar, obtain a repair assessment first.
Five checks before paying
- The model, dimensions and load limit are known.
- The base and attachments have no visible damage.
- Required adjustments work and hold their settings.
- The chair fits the desk and castors suit the floor.
- The price includes likely cleaning and repair costs.
Ask for faults to be recorded in writing and photograph the included parts at handover. Buy a condition you can check, not an unsupported “ergonomic” label.
