When space beside the sink is limited, a clearer worktop is especially welcome. A folding dish rack sounds convenient, but width is only one consideration. Check room for the open mechanism, the tray and the full drainage route.
Take two sets of measurements
Record the available worktop area and the storage space. You need open dimensions for the first and folded dimensions for the second. Allow for a projecting spout, handles and access to the tap. Do not assume an obstructing part is removable unless the instructions confirm it.
A paper rectangle matching the outer dimensions makes a useful trial. Place it beside the sink and see whether the neighbouring cupboard opens and your usual large plate fits. This tests positioning, not load capacity: check permitted loads separately.
Follow the water
Some designs collect water in a removable tray; others channel it into the sink. These are different arrangements. Joseph Joseph Flip-Up 85139 has a draining spout; IKEA HULTARP 60448766 has a removable tray. Examples explain the distinction, not the condition of a particular used item.
Ask for photographs of the underside, hinges, tray and complete set. A missing foot is not merely cosmetic. On a level surface, check stability empty, then cautiously try a suitable unbreakable item. Do not overload the rack to test it.
Make cleaning practical
Can you reach corners and parts where water collects? Removable does not mean dishwasher-safe: the Flip-Up instructions specify hand washing and drying. Find the actual instructions for a different model.
Before folding, empty, clean as permitted and dry the rack. Do not hide a wet tray inside a closed cupboard. A hinge or gap that cannot be cleaned properly is a reason to consider another design, not stronger chemicals. When selling, show cracks or corrosion in a separate photograph.
Compare the supports with your own dishes: a deep bowl and a flat plate occupy space differently. A photograph of small cups does not establish whether your everyday set will fit.
