Late October is a useful time to put away watering equipment before freezing weather. Start with a small inventory: hose, feeder hose, spray gun, connectors and reel. Parts of the same kit may have different storage requirements.
Identify the model first
Photograph the labels on the reel and attachments and keep the instructions. A frost-proof claim for one component does not cover the whole kit. Hozelock advises bringing Auto Reel indoors for winter. GARDENA permits certain AquaRoll and CleverRoll generations to remain outdoors, while generally recommending frost-free storage. These instructions are not interchangeable.
Separate the ordinary removable kit
Turn off the supply and release pressure through the attachment. Disconnect the hose from the tap and remove detachable accessories in the manufacturer's specified order. Let water escape freely rather than leaving both ends closed. Do not open a spring-loaded automatic reel housing: use that model's winter instructions.
Do not add compressed air, antifreeze or heat as an improvised precaution. An underground irrigation system, an outdoor tap and a loose hose are different equipment. This checklist is not a plumbing winterisation guide. Ask the installer if the tap arrangement is unfamiliar.
Prepare the storage space
After draining, clean exterior surfaces and let accessories dry. Coil without sharp kinks and keep heavy objects off the hose. Put small parts together in a labelled container, retaining their seals. Record cracks, leaks and missing connectors now rather than rediscovering them next spring.
Choose a genuinely frost-free place for components that require it: a closed but unheated shed does not guarantee that. Hozelock specifically warns about water remaining inside hose-end attachments. A dry exterior does not mean a spray gun is empty inside.
If passing the kit to another owner, include connection photographs and a parts list. This shows which feeder hose and attachments are included instead of asking the buyer to reconstruct the contents from one reel picture. Do not promise verified frost resistance without documentation.
Before closing the shed
- Instructions match the actual models.
- Supply is off; the removable kit is disconnected and drained.
- Attachments have been checked separately.
- Storage meets each component's requirements.
- A kit photograph and parts list are saved.
