A folding music stand may look tall enough and conveniently compact in a photograph. During practice, however, the support width, bottom ledge depth and space for the opened legs also matter. Begin with what you will actually place on the desk: loose sheets, a thin booklet or a particular score.
Measure the music as well as the stand
Note the width and height of the required spread and the closed book's thickness. Check whether the desk supports that format adequately. An open wire design and a solid desk are different options; the same outside width does not establish the same convenience.
König & Meyer lists desk dimensions, height and folded size separately for model 10065, with a carrying case among its accessories. König & Meyer: 10065 Music stand
This illustrates independent measurements, not a recommendation of that model. Ask about the actual item's dimensions and whether a bag is included, even if one appears in an advertising photograph.
Establish where height was measured
Ask for the distance from the floor to the lower music-support ledge at the chosen setting. Total height to the top edge answers a different question. Consider whether you play sitting or standing and compare it with your usual music position.
Do not choose solely from a catalogue's maximum figure. What matters is whether normal adjustment provides the position you need and whether the legs have room to open where you practise. Mark the proposed footprint on the floor without obstructing a walkway.
Watch the intended folding sequence
Ask the owner to demonstrate ordinary setup and folding on a level surface. Do not pull an unfamiliar hinge if its direction is unclear. Inspect fittings, adjustment knobs, feet and visibly bent parts. Identify a missing component by model first: a random screw is not a suitable replacement merely because it enters the hole.
Once assembled according to its instructions, and with the seller's agreement, place your music on it if that load is permitted for the model. This checks convenience, not strength. Do not hang weights from the stand, lean heavily on the desk or use it to support a person.
Check the travel set
Fold the stand as intended and compare its length with the bag. Inspect the bag's zip, handle and seams separately. Establish whether pictured clips or other accessories are included; their compatibility also needs checking.
Do not disguise slipping height adjustment, instability or damaged locking as something the buyer must “get used to”. If the ordinary position holds only through force or an improvised modification, stop and establish the repair question before buying.

A suitable stand matches your music and practice space. A short demonstration shows the mechanism; it does not establish suitability for any heavy book or accessory.
