Leaf cleanup starts with a route, not the biggest bag: where will you rake, how will you carry the leaves and where will they go? In Estonia, conditions depend on the municipality and service. Tartu announced seasonal collection on 19 October 2026. That does not mean the same arrangements apply in Tallinn or at every address.
Match the rake to the space
For leaves, try holding a fan rake and making a few gentle movements. Check whether you have to keep bending. A wider head is not automatically easier: shrubs, steps and narrow paths may leave little room. Do not choose solely by the width visible in a photograph. Ask for the handle length, head dimensions and whether the tool can be taken apart for transport.
Inspect a second-hand tool
Check the connection between head and handle, the tines and the surfaces you will grip. A loose joint, crack or splinter is a reason to decline or assess the repair beforehand. For an adjustable rake, ask the seller to demonstrate the locking mechanism. Try a calm working movement rather than a strength test. Close-up photographs of these parts are more useful in a listing than a distant tool on a beautiful lawn.
Separate carrying from collection
A reusable garden bag may work well for carrying leaves around your plot, but it is not automatically packaging the collector will accept. Before buying, check permitted material, volume, weight, closure and placement. Do not fill it beyond what you can lift safely: wet leaves change the load. Inspect the base and handle stitching. Choose capacity for your strength and route, not simply the lowest price per litre.
Check the rules for your own address
Read the current municipal page or your collector’s conditions. Ask whether booking is needed, whether only leaves or other garden waste are accepted, whether the service is included in your agreement and when bags should be put out. Do not carry someone else’s old timetable into this autumn. Keep packaging and household rubbish separate from leaves. If you intend to compost on your plot, check local conditions and a suitable location before automatically buying bags.
Before buying
- Narrow spaces and the carrying route are measured.
- Rake joints and bag handles are checked.
- The filled capacity is manageable.
- Collector requirements are clear before purchase.
- Dates and address match the current service.
Start with a suitable tool and a clear plan for the leaves. A good kit saves money and unnecessary carrying. This is a seasonal checklist, not evidence of rising demand for garden products.
