A headlamp is useful on dark autumn evenings, but its care does not end when the walk does. A damp lamp put straight into a bag and a button pressed by other belongings are two different problems. Give each a place in your routine. The steps below are a preparation and storage checklist, not a promise that any lamp is waterproof.
Before leaving: identify the exact model
Find the model name and its instructions. Confirm which batteries or rechargeable battery are compatible and how the model prevents accidental activation. Do not assume that a familiar-looking button uses the same long press as your previous lamp. If you cannot explain how to unlock it again, practise at home rather than discovering the controls on a dark path.
Check the lamp while your hands are free
Try the modes you intend to use, adjust the headband and check that the lamp stays at the chosen angle. Look at the lens, closure and accessible battery compartment for visible damage. These checks are useful preparation, not proof of a remaining runtime or a waterproof rating. Decide where the lamp will go after use so that a wet item does not disappear among other equipment.
After rain: use the maker’s drying method
Petzl’s care guidance recommends removing removable rechargeable batteries after wet use and allowing equipment to air-dry away from heat and UV. For your own lamp, follow its specific instructions: a removable battery is not the same as a sealed pack. Do not pry open a sealed unit or improvise a radiator-drying method. Deal with drying before preparing the lamp for its next outing.
Before packing: protect the lens and the switch
Petzl recommends a protective pouch and the model’s lockout function to avoid accidental switching. A pouch protects the lamp; it is not a reason to store it damp. Once the lamp is ready for storage, use the documented lockout and check that you understand how to release it. For longer storage, follow the battery-removal instructions applicable to your model rather than treating every lamp identically.
Buying a used headlamp? Ask for a demonstration
Ask the seller for the exact model, included power source and matching charging accessories. Request a demonstration of modes and, where applicable, charging and lockout. Ask how the lamp was dried after wet use. A clean exterior cannot establish waterproofness or battery health. Record what was actually demonstrated and what remains unknown; that is more useful than a vague claim that the lamp is “ready for anything”.
