After the last outdoor cleanup, putting the pressure washer in the shed feels like the end of the job. Before Estonia’s colder season, however, separate two decisions: how to prepare the machine and where to keep it. A clean casing does not reveal whether water remains inside.
Start with the model label
Photograph the identification plate and find the manual for that exact machine. Different washers from the same maker may have different preparation sequences. Kärcher’s K 5 Power Control manual warns that incompletely emptied equipment can suffer frost damage. It also calls for draining accessories and storing the equipment somewhere frost-free. An apparently empty hose end is therefore not proof that the whole system is dry.
Do not select a dry-running time for the pump from a general online tip. Follow your model’s instructions for disconnection, pressure release, switching off and draining. If the manual is missing or the model cannot be identified, ask the manufacturer before experimenting. Do not pour a homemade antifreeze mixture into the machine.
Choose the place before packing
“Under a roof” and “protected from freezing” are different things. Could the chosen room fall below freezing during winter? If you do not know, do not assume a shed or garage is suitable. Find a place that meets the manual’s storage conditions. Arrange the equipment so that hoses do not become trip hazards or supports for heavy boxes.
Check the washer, supply hose, high-pressure hose, gun and nozzles separately, according to what your set actually contains. An accessory list makes it easier to distinguish a missing part from one stored in another box. Keep removed pieces together and leave the model label accessible.
Leave a short handover note
- Record the model and where to find its manual.
- Note the last use and the preparation steps completed.
- List known leaks, damage and missing accessories separately.
- Add the contents of the set and its storage location.
This is a practical reminder, not a service certificate. If you later sell the washer, share the same details and clear photographs of connections, hoses and accessories. Do not describe it as free of frost damage merely because it looks tidy. If it has already been exposed to cold and its condition is doubtful, do not substitute a hurried pressure test for an appropriate inspection.
Winter preparation ends with two checks rather than a closed shed door: the model-specific steps are complete, and the storage place is suitable for the entire period. That simple distinction also makes the next handover easier, whether the next user is a buyer or you in spring.
