The breakfast table may be clean while crumbs inside the toaster remain out of sight. Before putting the appliance away or preparing it for sale, locate its removable crumb tray. This accessible part is a useful place to begin an inspection without trying to reach the heating elements.
Make room on a dry surface
Plan the job after the appliance has cooled, not immediately after the last slice. Unplug it and place it on a stable, dry surface. Leave space beside it for the removed tray, rather than holding the tray over the cable or sink.
Russell Hobbs summarises the sequence as unplugging, cooling, wiping the removed tray and drying it before refitting. That does not mean the whole appliance can be washed. Russell Hobbs: How do I clean my toaster?
Check how your model releases the tray
Read the model marking and find its manual. A product photograph may hide the tray, and its small handle may be at the back. Do not pull on an unidentified panel or undo screws to find crumbs. If the part will not move as instructed, stop and ask the manufacturer.
The Russell Hobbs 26210-56 manual explicitly prohibits operation without the tray. Find the specific instructions for other models. Russell Hobbs 26210-56: User manual
Separate cleaning from repair
Inspect the removed tray for bent edges, a cracked handle or residue that the permitted cleaning method does not remove. Do not reshape its fitting by guesswork just to make it slide in. If it is missing, establish the correct replacement part and whether it is available before proceeding.
Do not insert a knife, screwdriver or wet cloth into the slots. Nor should improving the appearance involve opening the casing. A damaged cable, signs of melting or a malfunction are reasons to stop preparing the appliance for use and seek servicing. A clean crumb tray does not establish that it is sound.
Refit it and record the condition
After the permitted cleaning, check that the part is dry and install it as instructed. Do this before the toaster is needed again: a tray left drying separately is easy to forget. Do not try the appliance with the tray removed.
For a listing, take separate photographs of the complete toaster, its model marking and the tray. Describe visible wear, included accessories and known faults. “Cleaned” describes care, not performance. If operation has not been checked, say so rather than implying a test. A photograph of the casing cannot demonstrate consistent browning.
Before storage or handover
- Find the exact model's instructions.
- Unplug the appliance and allow it to cool before cleaning.
- Clean the tray as permitted, dry it and refit it.
- Avoid dismantling or cleaning inside the slots.
- Disclose missing parts and faults.
Routine care should end with a correctly assembled appliance and a clear account of its condition. If that requires repair, resolve the repair question rather than making cleaning more aggressive.
