A used battery radio is worth testing as a receiver, not merely as a box that lights up. Before paying, ask for a demonstration that includes a real broadcast and enough time to operate the controls yourself. The useful question is whether you can follow spoken information comfortably.
Olevalmis.ee recommends a battery-powered or dynamo radio for receiving information during an electricity outage.
Start with independent power
Ask for the exact model and check its manual for the supported battery type and operating mode. Agree who will provide suitable batteries for the test. Disconnect the wall adapter and any external USB supply, including a power bank. Turn the radio off and on again in this configuration. A display that works only with a cable attached does not demonstrate battery operation.
If the seller cannot demonstrate independent power, record that as untested rather than assuming a new set of batteries will solve it. A short successful demonstration establishes operation at that moment, not how many hours the radio will run.
Tune an actual station
Select the broadcast band you intend to use. Find a station available at the meeting location, then listen through a stretch of speech at normal volume. Can you understand whole sentences without leaning towards the speaker? Listen for persistent crackling, distortion or sound that disappears while the radio remains still.
Move the tuning slightly away and return to the station. With digital tuning, try the buttons and any preset you expect to use. With an analogue dial, check that small movements allow a stable setting. Ask the seller to show unfamiliar functions, then repeat the sequence yourself.
Check the controls and antenna
Change the volume gradually and operate the power switch again. Extend and reposition the antenna gently, only as the manual permits. Note loose sections or a joint that will not hold its position. Compare reception in another nearby position; one poor spot alone does not identify a fault in the radio.
Repeat the test at home
After purchase, tune the same station where you expect to listen, still without external power. Try another position if speech is unclear. Note the frequency, usable position and control sequence for the person who will use it. Reception at the seller's address is useful evidence, but your own room needs its own test.
