A warm, comfortable autumn coat can still leave its reflector hidden under a bag. Check the whole outfit you wear outside, not just an accessory lying on a table. When buying a second-hand coat, a shiny strip in a photograph does not establish its condition or purpose.
Start with purpose, not shape
Distinguish a decoration from a product intended to improve pedestrian visibility. Ask for the packaging, instructions and manufacturer name if available. Do not assign protective properties to an unidentified item. Transpordiamet recommends certified reflectors and replacing scratched or dull ones. Inspect a used accessory’s edges, suspension connection and fastening as well as its front. Do not keep a broken piece as a supposedly useful spare.
Try your normal outfit together
Put on and fasten the coat, carry your bag or backpack and raise the hood as you normally would. Ask someone to look from the front, behind and both sides. Official guidance calls for visibility from different directions. Check whether a sleeve, scarf or strap covers the reflector. If walking changes its position, adjust the attachment according to its instructions and check again.
Inspect gently, without risky experiments
You can compare reflection at home with a torch rather than testing on a road. This can reveal dirt or damage, but it does not prove certification or measure the distance at which a driver will notice you. Follow the care instructions; do not improvise with solvents, abrasives or hot drying. Inspect the accessory and its attachment again after washing the coat.
What to show when selling clothing
Photograph reflective details close up and in ordinary light, including damage. Do not describe the whole coat as protective clothing merely because it has strips. Say clearly whether a separate reflector is included. If it is not, avoid a misleading photograph. An honest condition report is more useful than a promise of visibility in every kind of weather.
Check before leaving
- The product’s purpose and instructions are known.
- Surface and fastening have been inspected.
- Clothes and bag do not cover it.
- Position has been checked from several sides.
- Check again when changing coats.
A reflector does not replace attention. Stop and check that crossing is safe; an attractive reflection in a photograph does not mean a driver has noticed you.
