A visibility vest that fits over a thin jumper may be awkward over a padded winter coat. Before buying one, settle two questions: what exactly is the product, and can you wear it as instructed with your usual winter layers? A size letter and a photograph of the front leave both questions open.
Ask for the whole label
Request a readable photograph of every label panel, including the reverse if information continues there. Ask the seller to identify the manufacturer and model, and match the label to the vest being offered. If several sizes appear in an advertisement, make sure the photographs show the one you would receive.
TTJA highlights CE and standard markings, Estonian instructions, and size and care information when choosing a vest. Read the supplied instructions for the model’s intended use. If you need it for a particular job, establish the required specification with the employer before shopping.
Read the size information carefully
Look for the manufacturer’s size chart and any body measurements on the label. Check whether a measurement refers to the wearer or the garment; they are not interchangeable. Ask for the vest’s width when laid flat and fastened if buying remotely. Have the seller explain exactly where the measurement was taken.
Use measurements to shortlist sizes rather than promise a fit. Winter coats differ in thickness and cut. Do not automatically choose your usual shirt size or assume that “one size” will accommodate every coat. Read any instructions about adjustment before deciding.
Try the fastening with winter layers
Wear the coat and intermediate layer you intend to use. Close the vest fully in the manufacturer’s intended way, without stretching it or adding makeshift fasteners. Move your arms, reach forward and sit down. Check whether the fastening stays closed and whether the arm openings pull against the coat.
If adjustable, try only the adjustment positions provided. A vest that can be closed while standing still may still feel restrictive during ordinary movement. Choose a different size or model if comfortable use requires leaving it open or altering its construction.
Finish with the instructions
For a used vest, ask about previous washing and compare the answer with its care instructions. An unknown wash history cannot establish remaining service life. Keep the instructions with the purchase details. A readable label and comfortable fit help you choose, but a visual inspection does not certify conformity or guarantee protection. If important product information remains missing, look for a better-documented option.
