Introduction
A car seat is the most important purchase for a child's safety. Here's what to consider.
Weight and age group
Group 0+ (0-13 kg, from birth to approx. 12-15 months) - only backwards, mandatory up to 9 kg, recommended for longer.
Group 1 (9-18 kg, approx. 9 months to 4 years) - forward, own 5-point seat belt.
Group 2/3 (15-36 kg, approx. 3.5-12 years) - booster seat, uses car seat belt.
Combined seats - 0+/1 (0-18 kg), 1/2/3 (9-36 kg) - longer life, but check safety tests.
Security
Check that the car seat is E-marked (R44 or newer R129). Explore security tests (ADAC, Plus Test). The R129 (i-Size) standard is more stringent - all seats must be rear-facing for up to 15 months, side impact test etc.
Installation
Isofix - the safest and easiest installation, reduces the risk of incorrect installation. Check if the car has Isofix mounts.
With a car seat belt - check that the installation is correct and that the seat manufacturer's instructions are followed.
Used car seat
Avoid buying a used car seat unless you know its full history. Do not buy if it has been in an accident, more than 5-7 years old, missing parts or instructions, visible damage.
Convenience
Cushion, headrest adjustment, angle of inclination, breathable material - the child must feel comfortable, especially on longer journeys.
